Alexander von Humboldt-Professor for the Ancient History of the Near and Middle East & Honorary Professor of Ancient Near Eastern History, University College London.

Studied Old Semantic Philology and Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Vienna. Studied abroad at the FU Berlin (1993-1994; DAAD): Magister 1994 (summa cum laude); PhD 1997 (summa cum laude & promotio sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae). Awarded the facultas docendi (11.2004) and venia legendi (01.2005) at the LMU Munich.

Academic positions: University of Helsinki (1997-1999), University of Tübingen (1999), LMU Munich (1999-2005) and University College London (2005-2015).

Visiting professorships and teaching appointments: University of Verona (2005); Innsbruck University (2008); UCL Qatar, Doha (2013; 2014; 2015; 2016); Koç University, Istanbul (2015).

Academic affiliations: Center for Advanced Studies, LMU Munich (full member, since 2015), Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (full member, since 2016); Academia Europaea (ordinary member, since 2016); German Archaeological Institute (full member, since 2017); European Science Foundation, College of Expert Reviewers (Member, 2018-2020).

Since August 2015 Alexander von Humboldt-Professor for the Ancient History of the Near and Middle East (W3).
