The Empire on the Margins: A Social History of the Egyptian Eastern Desert during the Roman Imperial Period (M. Hahn)

This habilitation project examines the Roman Eastern Desert of Egypt as a social space of imperial presence beyond urban centres. Drawing on archaeological, epigraphic and, above all, ostracological sources, it analyses the everyday lives of soldiers, nomadic desert dwellers and traders/prostitutes between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE. The focus is on the question of how the Roman Empire was experienced, practised and defined in an extreme periphery. more

Identity and Competition - The Development of Hermupolis Magna during the Roman Empire (complete)

A dedicated historical study of Hermupolis Magna would fill a substantial gap in the study of Graeco-Roman Egypt, but also in the study of the ancient city in general. The habilitation project conducted by Dr. Alexander Free aims to produce such a history of the city that incorporates all the new source material. more

Research Network "Norm and Narration in Ancient Societies"

The research network "Norm and Narration in Ancient Societies" organises researchers from a broad range of disciplines from the field of Ancient Studies, including Oriental Philology, Egyptology, Coptology, Ancient History, Classical Philology, Bible Studies, Patrology, as well as Jewish and Islam Studies. The network's central concern is with issues of norm establishment, tradition and criticism in and by narrative texts. more

Plautus and the People of Rome. The Society of the Middle Republic in its Comedies (Dr. M. Hinsch)

Drawing on the findings of philological research, the project proposes a new methodology for making full use of comedy as a historical source. It posits that the 2nd century BCE did not witness not the creeping corruption of a Roman cultural identity, but its genesis. more
