19.09.2024 at 14:51

Shortly after the financial crisis of 2007, anthropologist and Occupy Wall Street co-founder David Graeber wrote the book Debt: The First 5000 Years - a world history of credit and money in which ancient history plays a central role. Recently, John Weisweiler published a book in which Graeber's theses are critically examined from an ancient historical perspective: Debt in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East, Oxford University Press, 2022). He is interviewed on the podcast Everyday Anarchism on this topic. They talk about the ancient origins of the modern credit system, Karl Jasper’s conception of the Axial Age, the character of ancient economies and much more.
